Lapwing - Mahogany Cabin Sides
(Click on image for larger version)
The cabin sides are cut from a single board of African Mahogany and although they are fully one inch thick, they bend round the bulkhead positions to the cabin shape, without difficulty. The cabin sides will be left in position for several days to allow the natural tensions within the board to relax a little, before we cut into them to install the port holes. We buy this timber in log form directly from the dock side, usually a 30ft log some 30" in diameter which we have sawn through and through into inch thick boards. There is virtually no waste as even the outer sapwood is used battens and so on.
