For yachting holidays on the Norfolk Broads

Lapwing - Counter Stern Laid Deck

The principal material in the laid deck is Teak (the darker material) with just the king planks and margin boards in the lighter Mahogany. The Norfolk Broads Yachting Co supports the "renewable resource" timber policy. The Teak used here is "plantation timber" where only trees of a given age are felled and then new trees planted in their place so that stock levels are maintained. It is true that such timber has a different appearance from the Teak of years ago, since that timber was taken by our predecessors from much more mature trees which are now all gone, whereas today the timber stock is converted from much smaller logs as the need for continued viability dictates. We are thus now used to working with much smaller stock sizes, and we are ever conscious of the cost, Teak is as much as 10 times the cost of the other timbers we use. It is however so durable that we reckon on a cost saving in long-term maintenance over a composite ply/epoxy deck, besides there is nothing quite so classy as a proper Teak laid deck and your bare feet will know the difference on a hot day!!.
